Compare against volatility trackers
Google confirms named updates, not every ranking shift. Independent trackers measure day-to-day turbulence across fixed keyword sets — a spike on your date with no confirmed update usually means an unannounced change.

Before blaming Google
- Check the measurement first. A tracking tag removed in a deploy, a consent-banner change or a GA4 filter produces a "drop" that Search Console will not show.
- Compare with Search Console. If clicks fell but impressions held, look at titles, rich results and SERP features before rankings.
- Rule out your own changes. Migrations, robots.txt edits, noindex tags, canonical changes and internal-link rewrites cause most sudden losses.
- Look at seasonality. Compare year on year, not week on week.
- Then the update. If one was rolling out, compare which pages and queries moved with the pattern the industry is reporting — and give it until the rollout finishes before acting.
